“The sleeper must awaken.” You’ve heard it, now it’s time to live it. Innovation starts with a spark within you, an insatiable desire to reach beyond the known, to create, to evolve. But how? Ignition comes from belief – a rock-solid, unshakeable belief in your ability to effect change. Cultivate this belief. Feed it daily with success stories, affirmations, and visualizations of your innovative future. Remember, belief fuels action, and action ignites innovation.
The Symphony of Your Experiences: Unleash Your Creativity

You are a mosaic of your experiences, each piece a story of triumphs, failures, joys, and lessons. These aren’t just memories; they are your arsenal for innovation. Dive into this treasure trove, extract the wisdom, and use it to solve problems in ways only you can. Your unique perspective is your ticket to innovation – it’s what sets you apart in a sea of sameness. Cherish it, use it, and watch as it propels you to new heights. In these times of rising artificial intelligence, your perspective, your uniqueness is more important than ever. Machines can recreate what has come before faster than you or anyone else can so the major difference for each of us is what we can uniquely create.
Cultivate a Garden of Curiosity

Curiosity is the soil where the seeds of innovation grow. It’s about looking at the world and asking, “Why?” and “What if?” Make curiosity a daily practice and banish boredom forever. Question everything. The status quo is your enemy, and curiosity, your ally in defeating it. By fostering an environment where questions are encouraged and exploration is rewarded, you’re building a breeding ground for innovation. Look around you all day every day and wonder why things are set up the way they are, how things could be better. You’ll connect dots and generate new ideas that electrify everyone around you.
The Path to Mastery: A Lifelong Journey

Innovation and mastery go hand in hand. You cannot change the world with what you know today. Embrace lifelong learning as a core principle. This doesn’t mean endless degrees; it means a commitment to growth. Read voraciously, listen to podcasts, attend workshops, and above all, apply what you learn. The path to mastery is paved with the bricks of continuous learning and the mortar of relentless application. Why haven’t you taken up a study on things that interest you? Are you waiting for someone to tell you what’s right? Do the work on yourself while no one’s looking to grow continuously. When I was working a terrible night shift in customer service at a tiny cell phone company, I read the help files and sought tutorials on using Microsoft Access because it seemed like something mysterious on every computer I touched. This curiosity and learning led me to a high degree of mastery in database systems, a master’s in computer science, and a deep understanding of technology that led me around the world for my unique perspective in healthcare. Who knew? Instead of pissing away that time when literally no one was watching, I picked up the tools that changed healthcare in more than 200 hospitals globally.
Build Your Tribe: Collaboration Is the New Competition

The era of the lone genius is over. Today, innovation is a team sport. Surround yourself with visionaries, challengers, and trailblazers. Your network should inspire you, push you, and, when necessary, lift you. Remember, the strength of the wolf is the pack, and in collaboration, you will find your strength. Together, you can challenge the impossible and transform it into the inevitable. You already have a pack, you have your team. Examine it and decide if it’s big enough and has the right people in it. If you had to add someone to your regular network, who would it be and why? What does that person get by networking with you? Really ask yourself these questions, even if you don’t know the answer. The questions focus your mind and you’ll come up with the answers even if you have to work for them.
Failure: Your Stepping Stone to Greatness

Success is not a straight line. If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough. Embrace failure as part of the innovation process. Each failure is a lesson, a pivotal step on your journey to success. Analyze it, learn from it, and then let it go. Do not fear failure; fear being in the same place next year as you are today because you were too afraid to act. The biggest piece of advice from people over 80 years old is to take more risks. When I studied gerontology and had to focus on one patient who was over 100 years old she told me that she wished she had taken more risks before 60. There were so many opportunities she’d missed out of a fear of failure. Even one of the opportunities she’d missed would have dwarfed all of the tiny failures combined. Learn to say yes to opportunity instead of dwelling on the risk of failure so hard.
Strategic Innovation: The Blueprint for Change

Innovation without strategy is like a ship sailing without a compass: it might move, but it’s going nowhere fast. Define your vision. Set clear, actionable goals. Then, execute with precision. Strategy is what turns your innovative ideas from dreams into reality. It’s the difference between being a dreamer and a doer. Be the latter. Have the guiding light, move towards the light, and don’t be too hard on yourself when you have to course correct. Most people don’t even have the light, they’re just going where the wind blows.
The Power of Adaptability: Thrive in the Face of Change

The only constant in life is change. Embrace it. When the winds of change blow, some people build walls, others build windmills. Be the windmill. Adaptability is a hallmark of innovators. They don’t just respond to change; they anticipate it, prepare for it, and, when necessary, provoke it. I took this lesson to heart and became an engine of change for most of my career. Driving innovation in healthcare technology, I was able to push change around the world. In adaptability, you will find resilience, and in resilience, the ability to persist until you succeed.
Your Inner Voice: The Guide to True Innovation

In the noise of the world, learn to listen to your inner voice. Some call it God, some call it intuition, others call it your subconscious. Whatever you call it, it’s there. It’s easy to be swayed by trends, opinions, and the fear of missing out. But true innovation comes from within. It’s the voice that whispers, “There’s a better way.” Learn to trust this voice. It’s your inner guide, your compass pointing towards your true north of innovation. It may not tell you how to go but it tell you where to go, and usually in a timely fashion. I knew in 1996 that technology had to come to healthcare. Combining a clinical background with a technical background was me following my intuition and was madness according to others. Now it was genius in retrospect and I’m glad I listened.
Celebrating Innovation: Your Path to Legacy

Innovation is not just about creating something new; it’s about creating something that makes a difference. It’s about leaving a legacy. Celebrate your victories, no matter how small. Remember that moving towards your goal 1% each day is a short path, so today’s 1% matters. Each victory is a step towards your legacy, a testament to your commitment to innovation. Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Start walking.
Unleash Your Innovator Within

Now, armed with these principles, you stand at the precipice of your potential. The path before you is clear, lit by the flames of your passion and guided by the compass of your strategy. This is your moment. Seize it with both hands. Embrace your unique gifts, cultivate your curiosity, commit to mastery, and build your tribe. Learn from failure, adapt, and above all, listen to that inner voice that dares you to dream.
Remember, you are the architect of your destiny, the innovator of your life’s journey. The world awaits your mark, your innovation, your legacy. It needs you. Start today, for tomorrow is shaped by the actions you take right now. Let’s do this!
